Sunday evening I finally convinced a friend of mine to make homemade ice cream with me. Since he's a big licorice fan we used pure anise flavoring in place of vanilla. Normally I use half and half to make my homemade ice cream but I opted for whole heavy cream because it turns into ice cream faster (and I'm impatient). Next time, however, I will remember to cut the heavy cream with milk or half and half because it left a less than desirable texture in your mouth.
Here was our recipe:
32oz heavy cream
2/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons anise flavoring

Old fashioned ice cream? Yes, please. There are a lot of ice cream makers out there these days. I think the best ones are the ones that you can have fun with while you're making your ice cream.
